How to: Export or download all documents from Google Docs

There is a project called data liberation project which aims at exporting or liberating the information from Google using a simple export feature. Here is a quick ‘how to‘ guide on ‘how to export all the documents from Google Docs‘ (PDF, WORD, EXCEL, PPT etc).

If you want to export all documents at once:

- Click on ‘All items‘ in your Google Docs on the main Google Docs page. Then you click the first button in the menu bar and choose “Select All visible (xxx) from”. Now all files will be highlighted

- Now, Click on ‘More Action‘ –> ‘Export‘

In the dialog you can now specify in what format the various types (Documents, Spreadsheets, Presentations, PDFs, and store files (like bookmarks from Chrome)) wants and what file types to be loaded.

After clicking ‘ Next‘, Google will automatically create a zip of all files. This process might take several minutes, depending on the number of documents you’ve stored in Google Docs. If you don’t want to wait untill the zipping process is complete, you can simply click on send to mail and it’ll automatically send all the zipped file via email..

Data liberation project comes to Google Docs

A few weeks ago, Google stared a project called “Data liberation“. The aim of this is to provide users the option to switch from Google to another provider or to Google account. In the same time, Google has announced an export feature for Google Docs and Sites. While currently the API is not available for Google sites but the function is available in Docs.

How to: Upload documents from your desktop to Google Docs

Google released a basic application for Windows that lets you upload files to Google Docs by using drag and drop. The application is more like a sample of what you can do with a Google Docs API, but it’s pretty useful if you want to upload a lot of documents. There’s also an option to add “Send to Google Docs” to the contextual menu so you can upload files directly from Windows desktop.

Here is how to upload documents from your desktop to Google docs using Doc uploader.

1. Download the application from http://google-gdata.googlecode.com/files/DocListUploader-1.0.exe and install it.

2. Once installed you can easily drag and drop the documents and upload it to your Google docs account.

3. You can also just right click on the documents from the desktop and send to Google docs.

Also, there is another way to upload more files at once is to send them to the email address displayed on this page, but this only works with documents and presentations and there are some restrictions regarding the size of the uploaded files.

Google Docs: Upload multiple files, fast!

Google announced, just like the gmail uploader now Google docs also comes with a flash uploader, which helps you to upload your files fast!

Google released an application for Windows that lets you upload files to Google Docs by using drag and drop. The application is more like a sample for Google Docs API, but it’s pretty useful if you want to upload a lot of documents. There’s also an option to add “Send to Google Docs” to the contextual menu so you can upload files directly from Windows Explorer.

The application can be downloaded from there and it requires .NET Framework 2.0.

This feature is another addition to Google docs, just like how to upload files via email to Google docs.

Its easy to upload Office documents to Google Docs – just attach the files to an email message and send it to a secret address that has been assigned to you by Google Docs.

What formats are supported?
Google docs supports uploading many documents like (Word, Excel, powerpoint etc). You can upload documents (up to 500KB). They could be HTML files and plain text (.txt), Microsoft Word (.doc, .docx), Rich Text (.rtf), OpenDocument Text (.odt) and StarOffice (.sxw) too. Presentations (up to 10MB from your computer, 2MB from the web, 500KB via email) supports Microsoft PowerPoint (.ppt, .pps), spreadsheets (up to 1MB) Comma Separated Value (.csv) and Microsoft Excel (.xls, .xlsx) files or OpenDocument Spreadsheet (.ods). PDF Files (up to 10MB from your computer, 2MB from the web)

What’s more?
You can also send images and store them in your Google Docs account. This is really a nice feature and it helps you upload pictures from your mobile phone too via email… just attach the picture or a document and send it to your secret address!

At least the front page of Google Docs will be in a few months getting a new look. Google announced this in a blog post on the Google Docs blog. In the next few days, changes should only be visible, now we are thinking why change suddenly? There are rumors that its going head on with Microsoft office 2010, since it also has a nice web based service.

Here is whats new in the next release of Google Docs:

- Shared with in the sidebar will soon be “removed”. To search for documents a person shares with you, you can use the advanced search.

- Search Operators for searching Docs

You’ll see these changes happen over the next few weeks. They will be followed shortly by the new interface and a number

Spice up the way you work with forms and how you feel using Google Docs

Google has launched 70 themes for forms so you can add a little (or a lot of) color to your surveys and questionnaires. Some themes are basic colors schemes (like Blue, Espresso, or Rose) and others are fancier designs (like Picnic, Zen Spring, and Dusk).

Go on add them and have fun…. How you ask??
When you’re editing a form, click the Theme button to find the right theme and apply it to your form. One caveat: These themes will be visible to your respondents when they fill out the form online, not within email (like Gmail).

Draw all you want, new feature in Google docs!

Insert Drawing, a new feature in Google Docs. Now you can create and insert rich, colorful drawings into documents, presentations and spreadsheets, to illustrate your ideas or just for fun.

It’s easy to create drawings using lines, free hand scribbles, text labels and a large choice of shapes that you can move, resize, rotate and adjust. Group, order, align and distribute and other features are available when you select objects you’ve drawn. You can also customize a range of shape properties, from line widths to fill color, and from arrowheads to font size, and much more. If you change your mind, there is undo and redo. You can collaborate with a friend or colleague on a drawing, or work alone, just as you can in Google Docs today.

The team and technology behind Insert Drawing originally came from the startup Tonic Systems, which Google acquired in 2007…. You’ll find Drawing within the Insert menu, so try it out.
