FAQs about the Google Chrome Channels

Google chrome beta

I am asked again and again about the Google Chrome Channel. I have now collected the questions and a FAQ together here.

1. What is a channel update?
An update channel helps software developers to publish various updates. Stable updates for the normal users and updates with new features may be incomplete for developers and users courageous.

2. Update Channels What is Google Chrome?
On Google Chrome, there are a total of three updates channels. A stable, beta, and a Dev channel.

3. What distinguishes the channels?
Stable Channel: Channel Stable In Google published about once a quarter of an update. The new features have been previously tested and are fully implemented. If there are vulnerabilities, Google also released during the three months security updates. Occasionally, also, for example, problems with Hotmail closed.

Beta Channel: The channel beta testing new features that Google is largely complete. Here it may still be errors. These versions may not be as stable as the updates in the stable channel. Google includes updates here about once a month.

Dev Channel: In the Dev Channel Google released new features that are either very incomplete or can only be activated via the command line. The dev versions are really only for developers and not for production use determined. One can compare these versions with an alpha software.

4. I would like to switch to another channel, how do I do that?
Google has given the Google Chrome Channel Changer 2.0 released. If this out, there are the three above-described channel selection. Make your choice, save it on "Save" and launch new Google Chrome. Now click on the wrench, and then click About Google Chrome. Chrome is looking for updates now and then to show you that there is an update. Now you can install the update.

5. I decided from the Dev channel back to the stable channel to change. What should I do?
Running the Channel Changers and selection of stable because nothing will help. You need to uninstall Google Chrome, and then the setup file from Google Chrome download new. Now the stable version of Google Chrome installed. Alternatively you can in the channel changer to select stable. However, you must then wait until Google released a stable version, which is higher than is Dev.

6. How do I get from Dev on the beta, or how do I switch from beta to stable?
To Dev on Beta: Here you go like before, as I understand it in 5th have described. Uninstall Chrome and install it again. Now you ran back to the Channel Changers and choose from the beta. Now Google Chrome gives you an update on. Alternative would be back in the channel changer to select beta and wait.

Beta to Stable: Either reinstall or channel changer in the stable and then wait until a new stable version was released.

7. Can I back up my profile?
Yes, before the change of a channel it is advisable to make a backup. Google makes changes to the profile, so that a profile that was used Chrome 2.0, 1.0 in Chrome may not work anymore.

To make a backup is actually quite simple. Make a copy of the default folder. For example, as a default backup.
In XP, you will find the folder in Documents and Settings USERNAME Local Settings Application Data Google Chrome User Data .
In Vista, Users USERNAME AppData Local Google Chrome User Data

Toggles your Dev now on beta (or stable), all data is copied from the default backup in default and so you have your passwords, settings and bookmarks back to it before the change had you back again.
